Leadership Development Is Not a Hand-Me-Down

In today’s environment, development is not a phase. It is a leadership requirement. The moment a leader stops developing is the moment they start falling behind, and the organization feels the consequences long before the leader realizes what has happened. The pace of change is unprecedented. Markets shift, technologies evolve, and expectations rise. Those of us who treat development as optional are not standing still; they are quietly becoming obsolete.

What concerns most is the number of leaders who expect their organizations to “take care” of their development. This mindset outsources one of the most fundamental responsibilities of leadership: staying relevant. When a leader waits for someone else to design and act on their growth, they signal a passive posture that is incompatible with the demands of modern leadership. Growth is not something that happens to a leader. It is something a leader pursues. And in a world where relevance is continuously earned, not granted by title, leaders who abdicate this responsibility are unintentionally limiting their own trajectory.

Leaders who rely solely on past achievements tend to fall into predictable patterns. They anchor their identity to what they accomplished years ago, assuming that what worked then will continue to work now. They resist new methods, avoid feedback, and delegate learning instead of modeling it. Their decision-making becomes repetitive, their solutions narrower, and their ability to navigate complexity diminishes. Over time, they become less effective, less credible, and less trusted. Their teams begin to outpace them, and their influence quietly erodes.

By contrast, high-performing leaders approach development as a self-driven journey. They do not wait for permission or perfect timing. They seek feedback, explore unfamiliar domains, and stretch themselves beyond their comfort zones. They read widely, engage with diverse perspectives, and remain open to learning even from those they disagree with. They understand that development is not a luxury reserved for quieter seasons; rather, it is part of the job. Their teams can only grow to the level of their own capability, and they take that responsibility seriously.

Ultimately, the most effective organizations are those that build ecosystems of development, not just programs. They set the tone at the top; however, they do not to drive the vehicle. Their role is to provide the fuel: feedback, assessments, learning programs, coaching, tools, and opportunities. The leader must choose the direction and the speed. Some will leave their development vehicle parked, and that is their choice, but they must understand the consequences. Others will drive forward, acquiring the right skills and behaviors to stay ahead. Direction matters. So does pace. A leader who develops slowly or sporadically may find themselves overtaken by peers who are learning faster, adapting quicker, and leading with greater agility.

When senior leaders visibly invest in their own growth, they send a powerful message: learning and development is not remedial, it is strategic. They embed learning into the flow of work, reward curiosity, and make it clear that development is a shared responsibility. But even in the best-designed systems, the burden of growth rests with the individual. No organization can manufacture drive. No program can substitute for personal ownership.

Development is not a hand-me-down. It is a choice. And in a world defined by speed, complexity, and constant reinvention, it is the only choice that keeps leaders and their organizations in motion.
